Two Students, Two Paths: A Parent's Perspective on Norwin Scholarships
Receiving a scholarship is usually discussed as a single moment: an award is announced, a student is recognized and money is put toward college. For families, the practical value of that scholarship can continue well beyond that moment.
Bud Geissler has experienced that with two of his children, both of whom received scholarships facilitated through the Norwin School District Community Foundation. Their college plans, financial needs and timelines were different, and so was the role their scholarships played.
That experience gave Bud a close look at a part of the process families may not think much about until they are in the middle of it. Scholarship funds have to work alongside tuition bills, financial aid packages and changing expenses from semester to semester. Having some flexibility in how those awards are used can make a meaningful difference.
For the Geissler family, that support helped make one college opportunity possible and gave another student room to use scholarship funds over several years. It also meant having someone at the Foundation available to help answer questions and work through the details as circumstances changed.
In this interview, Bud shares that parent’s perspective: what scholarship support looks like after the award ceremony, how differently it can help two students in the same family, and why the work behind administering those scholarships matters. He also reflects on the donors who made those opportunities possible for his children and other Norwin graduates.
